今回は心理学とは少し離れますが、目についたことについてお話ししようと思います。内容に汚話を含んでいるので、読むタイミングに注意してください。

読者の皆さんは【クチャラー】という造語、意味をご存知でしょうか?知っている人は一気に思い出し、食事中の人は不快感が押し寄せてきたかもしれません・・・。
私も書きながら不快になっているのですが、今回はなぜ【クチャラー】が人をそんなに不快にさせるのかを考えてみたいと思います。
随分昔に『自分の食事風景をマナーとエチケットという視点から他者と一緒に評価してみる』という、いろいろな意味でとんでもなく恥さらしで穴があったら入って埋めたくなってしまう講義がありました。
それは定点カメラで自分一人と、グループで食事中の自分の姿を記録して『評価し合う』という考えただけでも恐ろしいもので、それが原因で人間関係が拗れてしまったという笑えない話もあるとかないとか。
幸いなことに、箸の持ち方、使い方、肘を付くなどテーブルマナーにも問題はなく、クチャラーについても無問題でしたが、グループの中に3人、一人は肘を付いて食べる人、もう一人は食器に顔を近付け、皿に顔が付かんばかりの食べ方をする、いわゆる“イヌ食い”、そして今回のテーマであるクチャラーがいました。
無自覚な人が多いのだと思いますが、咀嚼する時に口を閉じず(閉じられず?)、咀嚼音を周りに響かせながら「クッチャクッチャ」と音を立てて食べるのがクチャラーです。誰でも咀嚼時には多少は音が出るものではありますが、彼らは食べ物を噛む度に「クチャクチャ」と咀嚼音、そして舌鼓を打つという文字通り舌を鳴らしたりします。
クチャラーと言われる人たちの多くは、口を閉じずに食べている人で、咀嚼音だけではなく、口腔内にある咀嚼中の食べ物が見えたりします・・・。
「食事くらい好きに食べたっていいじゃん!」そう思う人もいるでしょう。確かにそうかもしれません。
クチャラー同士だとわかりませんが、目の前でクチャクチャ音を立てて食べられると、周りは不快になるものです。咀嚼音ではありませんが、音を立てて啜って美味しそうだと思うのは蕎麦やラーメンぐらいでしょうか。これからの季節はそうめんや冷や麦が美味しそうです。
そして、クチャラーに対して不快になるにはもっともな理由もあるのです。
クチャラーではない人は、食べ物を咀嚼したり飲み込む時には口を閉じます。しかし、
クチャラーの咀嚼音が大きいのは、口を開けたまま咀嚼したり飲み込んだりするから
です。
咀嚼は、歯で食べ物を細かくし飲み込みやすくするためにおこなわれる行為です。
クチャラーのように口を開けたままの状態でクチャクチャ噛むと、当然、細かくなった食べ物や唾液が飛び散りやすくなります。潔癖症でなくても、どれほど仲が良いカップルや家族でも、目の前の他者の口から飛び散った食べ物のカスが、テーブルや自分の食器に付いていい気持ちの人はいません。

人が食事を楽しむのに使っているのは味覚だけではありません。美味しそうに見える(視覚)、美味しそうな匂い(嗅覚)、そして、例えば肉のジュージュー焼ける音、鍋のグツグツ煮える音(聴覚)、いろんな感覚をフルに使い、食事を味わっています。

そこに、口を開けて食べている口腔内が見え、クチャクチャと音がする・・・これはもう食事を楽しむどころか、不快感満載の雑音でしかないわけです。
私自身、元祖昭和(笑)なので、息子にも厳しくマナーやエチケットを教え込んでいる真っ最中ですが、マナーやエチケットは
“その人のため”にだけあるのではなく、同じ空間、時間を過ごす他者を不快にしないために身につけるもの
だと思うのです。
クチャラーに限らず、人混みをかき分けて降車しなければならない時に、ただただ力業でグイグイ押し退けるのではなく、ひと言「すみません、降ります(通してください)」が言えること、店で料金を渡す時に投げるように放り出す(案外見るのでびっくりします)、見ている人を不快にする行為はいくらでもあります。
自分に置き換えてみてください。
満員電車で身動きが取れない中、力任せにグイグイ押し退けられるのと、「すみません、降ります」とひと言あるのとでは、どちらに好感が持てますか?
あなたがコンビニスタッフでカウンターにいたとしましょう。トレーにお金を置いてくれたり、手渡すお客さんと、カウンターに小銭を放り投げるように払う(時々転げ落ちて拾わないといけない)お客さん、どちらに好感を持ちますか?
年齢や性差に関係なく見られます。『自分は客なんだ!』を“偉い”と勘違いして横暴、横柄な振る舞いをする人たち。目にする度に残念な気持ちになります。相手はロボットではなく人間です。自分が逆の立場だったらどう感じるでしょう。
クチャラーや食事中のゲップ、『自分は気にならない』という人も少数いると思いますが、言わない、表情に出さないだけで不快に感じている人が大多数ではないでしょうか。
エチケットやマナーは他者を不快にさせないために身につけておく(自分の品を守るためにも)ものであるということを意識すると、それが結果、他者への気遣いに繋がると思うのです。
箸を上手に使い、キレイな食べ方をしている人は見ていて気持ちいいものです。せっかくの楽しいはずの食事、皆で楽しい時間が過ごせるといいですね。
